Why she couldn't sleep wasn't a mystery to her. It was the lack of noise coming from the only bedroom in the flat, keeping her awake out here on the couch. Usually, Annagramma fell asleep quite peacefully to the sounds of Alex's light snores coming through the door that would always be open a crack in case he had to rush out to her in the middle of the night.

Tonight the door was firmly shut.

Tonight, he had a girl over.

And they had cast a silencing charm all around the room.

It had never occurred to Victoria just how much went on at the White House that no one knew about. There were the ideas everyone had of what the president and his family could and couldn't do, but it wasn't exactly public knowledge. Victoria had been glad of that much as she held on to her youngest child more tightly than she ever had.

Someone had been tailing her all afternoon, in the shadows just out of sight.

But she hadn't expected the small note from the security detail on her desk that evening.

Target's gone.

"You are also a Lady. In our family, Ladies do not stoop to defend themselves."

Aurore wasn't sure what he meant as he stepped forward to kiss her hand in greeting.

"Why are you so mad?"

"Oh, I don't know, Jackson." Victoria replied shortly, picking up the files from her desk even as the President tried to stop her from doing so. "Possibly because I would very much like a break, for even one afternoon."

The man was silent.

"Don't you remember, the feeling of a lazy afternoon, where we didn't have anywhere to be? Those lazy afternoons where we could just be ourselves. Now, I can't even mourn my child for an afternoon before I am forced in to another party, or ballroom! It's disgusting!"

"Yeah huh!" The hyper child confirmed with an almost alarmingly enthusiastic nod of her head. "Babies change every day. Nani told us so! The baby will be as tall as me by nowwwww!"

The brunette laughed. "Not quite yet, my darling "

"Hey..."

The dark brown orbs refocused on him, and Jake gave the witch a small, comforting smile as his hand squeezed hers.

"Mimosa's going to be fine." Jake insisted, leaning in to press a kiss to Azalea's lips to reassure her of that much. "I can see what's going on behind those eyes, and I can guarantee you our baby is going to be just fine."

A slow nod came from the brunette in that moment, and Jake shifted Azalea's small frame from the bed in to his lap, his arms encircling tightly.

"She's a fighter, like you."

The sentiment behind those few words was greater than she could bear. It was unfathomable how he couldn't love her when he was the reason Mimosa knew anything about love at all. He wasn't just someone she was in love with. To her, he was love. All her life, he had shown her what love was, how it felt and from where it began. He had been her whole life for as long as she could remember. How could she not love him?

And how could he not love her back?

"Everyone rise... The jury here finds the defendant guilty. I therefore extend the prisoners sentence for another ten years, no bail."

Jake let out a breath of relief he hadn't realised he was holding as he pulled Azalea close to him, a soft kiss pressing in to her temple. This had gone on long enough, but now, hopefully they would be able to sleep at night, knowing the man who'd broken in to their home would be locked away securely for a long time.

"This isn't over, Newbury. Do you hear me? This isn't over!"

"Come on, let's go home."
